The Aymara
indians used to despise the wild vicuña. But with prices of vicuna fur
skyrocketing, their attitudes have changed. Now the entire village goes on a
wild vicuña hunt to capture and shave as many as possible. They then sell the
fur to manufacturers, who use it for designer scarves and sweaters. The
practice may have saved the llama-like animal from extinction.
