The new butcher, baker, candlestick maker: just how
real are they?
The new 'artisans'
popping up on our high streets have nothing to do with the skilled workers of
history – they're selling a vibe
Three "artisanal" foodshops opened in
my neighbourhood last week. They don't explicitly use the term (for one thing
this is hipster east London, and "artisanal" is a bit 2009), but still
the message is clear: shopping and eating in these places is a bit more
special, a bit more refined, than the soulless experience on offer in your
local Tesco Metro or Costa.
